Leather-Flower -- Clematis viorna

Family Ranunculaceae (Buttercup family)

This strange vine produces very distinctive-looking flowers with extremely thick, leathery sepals (hence the name) that are reddish-purple in color. This species can be found along streams, at woodland borders and near ditches from mid-June to early July.
