American Columbo -- Frasera caroliniensis
Family Gentianaceae (Gentian family)
Individual plants of this species may exceed 7 feet in height, with a large rosette of
leaves at the ground which may be 3-4 feet in diameter. This plant is a triennial, producing
only a rosette of leaves its first two seasons, and then producing a flower stalk in the third
year before dying. It can be found along roadsides and in marginal areas just inside
the woods, between mid-May and early June.
