Virginia Bluebells -- Mertensia virginica
Family Boraginaceae (Borage family)
Virginia bluebells are one of our most common wildflowers, found
in April and May in shady areas, commonly in moist spots near
streams. This plant is quite common and quite plentiful in some
places. Flower buds are pink, turning blue when the flower is
fully opened. Although very common in Western Kentucky, this
specimen was actually photographed in Menifee county during a
recent camping trip.
