New England Aster -- Aster novae-angliae

Family Asteraceae (Aster family)

While our region contains many representatives of the genus Aster, the New England aster is perhaps one of the most distinctive and most beautiful, producing plants often reaching 6 feet in height with dense clusters of bright purple flowers at the terminal tips. This plant blooms from late August to October in old fields, waste places and roadsides.
